The IED stands for the “Industrial Emissions Directive” and is a crucial regulatory framework designed to minimise pollution from industrial activities across Europe.
Adopted by the European Union, the directive aims to protect human health and the environment by setting stringent limits on emissions from a variety of industrial sources. The IED covers a broad range of industries, including energy, metals, minerals, chemicals, waste management, and agriculture.
The IED mandates the use of BAT, which are the most effective and advanced methods to achieve high environmental protection standards. These techniques must be economically and technically viable for your industry. The European Commission regularly updates BAT reference documents (BREFs) for various sectors, providing detailed guidance on compliance.
The directive adopts an integrated approach to pollution prevention and control, ensuring that all environmental impacts (air, water, and soil) are considered. This holistic approach helps in reducing overall emissions and promoting sustainable industrial practices.
Under the IED, industrial installations must obtain a permit to operate. This permit outlines specific conditions and emission limits based on BAT and other relevant standards. Regular inspections and monitoring are conducted to ensure compliance.
The IED sets ELVs for various pollutants, including sulfur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen oxides (NOx), dust, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These limits are based on the potential environmental impact and are designed to minimise harmful emissions.
The directive includes provisions for flexibility, allowing businesses to apply for derogations under specific conditions. This ensures that the regulations are practical and achievable while maintaining high environmental protection standards.
Compliance with the IED is not just a legal requirement; it's a commitment to sustainability and responsible business practices. By adhering to the directive, your business can benefit in several ways:
The Industrial Emissions Directive is a vital component of the EU's environmental policy, driving industries towards a cleaner, more sustainable future. We were contracted to provide 2 small Ceramic filters suitable for a small volume but with a design maximum temperature of 600°C. In addition the filters will be handling a syngas which cannot be mixed with oxygen so an alternative to compressed air would need to be used for the ‘Cleanpulse’ cleaning of the 25 Ceramic element in each of these CPC78 filters. In addition dosing of small amounts of a re-agent is required so the client also opted for a ‘Cleandose’ 25kg bag skid. Find out more about Project CAD below.
